Tick ↔ Real-Time Converter

Java Edition

Convert between game ticks, redstone ticks, real time and Minecraft days — handy for redstone timing, farm rates, command delays and /tick rate experiments.

Convert

20 is normal. /tick rate changes it on Java 1.20.3+.

As a time of day

06:00
Morning · /time set 0 · day 2

Treats the amount as ticks since the world started (/time query daytime). 0 is 06:00, 6000 noon, 12000 sunset, 18000 midnight. Beds work from 12542 (rain: 12010).

How it works

The game advances in ticks: 20 per second when nothing is lagging. Everything — crop growth, furnaces, mob AI, redstone — happens on tick boundaries.

Redstone components count in redstone ticks, which are 2 game ticks (0.1 s). A repeater delays 1–4 redstone ticks; a hopper moves one item every 8 game ticks.

A full day–night cycle is 24,000 ticks (20 minutes). /time set 0 is sunrise-ish 06:00, 6000 is noon, 12000 sunset and 18000 midnight. Changing the tick rate with /tick rate speeds everything up or slows it down — in-game durations stay the same number of ticks, only the real time changes.

Formulas

Real time
seconds = game ticks ÷ tick rate (normally 20)
Redstone ticks
redstone ticks = game ticks ÷ 2
Days
days = game ticks ÷ 24,000
Clock
hour = (⌊ticks ÷ 1000⌋ + 6) mod 24 · minute = (ticks mod 1000) × 0.06

FAQ

How long is a Minecraft day?

24,000 game ticks, which is 20 real minutes at the normal 20 ticks per second: 10 minutes of day, 50 seconds of sunset, 8 min 20 s of night and 50 seconds of sunrise.

What is a redstone tick?

Two game ticks (0.1 seconds). Repeaters, comparators and most redstone timings are measured in redstone ticks.

When can I sleep?

In clear weather beds work from time 12542 to 23460 (about 18:32 to 05:27 on the in-game clock); while it rains or thunders from 12010 to 23992.

Does /tick rate change how many ticks a day lasts?

No. A day is always 24,000 ticks; a higher tick rate just runs them faster in real time.
