Nether Portal Calculator

Java & Bedrock

Type coordinates from either dimension to get the matching spot on the other side, then add your portals to see exactly which one each portal will link to — before you light anything.

Coordinates

Press F3 (Java) to read your coordinates. Use the block your feet are in.

Nether coordinates

x

Distance from 0,0 (Overworld)

Distance from 0,0 (Nether)

The game looks for an existing portal within ±16 blocks of this spot in the Nether (full height) and uses the closest one.

Portal linking checker

Add the portals you have (or plan) in both dimensions. Each row shows where that portal sends you and whether the link works both ways.

  • Two-way link→ Hub (Nether 125, 70, -60), 6 blocks from the target 125, 64, -60
  • Two-way link→ Base (Overworld 1000, 64, -480), 6 blocks from the target 1000, 70, -480

Also on Minecraft Tools: seed maps, structure finders and coordinate tools for your world.

How it works

One block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld horizontally. Going to the Nether, X and Z are divided by 8 and rounded down; coming back they are multiplied by 8. Y never changes.

When you step through, the game searches around that converted point for an existing portal: 128 blocks in every horizontal direction in the Overworld, but only 16 blocks in the Nether, across the full world height. It picks the closest portal by straight-line 3D distance, so a portal far above or below can lose to one further away sideways.

If nothing is in range, a new portal is generated near the target — the usual cause of “my portals don't link”. Build the partner portal at the exact converted coordinates to guarantee a two-way link.

FAQ

Why does my Nether portal take me to the wrong portal?

The game links to the closest portal (3D distance) within 16 blocks of the converted point in the Nether, or 128 blocks in the Overworld. Another portal closer to that point — even one far above or below — wins. Add both portals to the checker to see the link.

How far apart must Overworld portals be to link separately?

Their Nether partners must each be the closest to their own converted point. In practice keep Overworld portals at least ~128 blocks apart, or build each Nether partner exactly at its converted coordinates.

Are Bedrock portals different?

The coordinates convert the same way, but Bedrock searches 128 blocks around the target in the Nether too (Java only searches 16). Bedrock portals therefore link to Nether portals much further away, and accidental cross-links are more common. Switch the edition to Bedrock to check your links.

Does Y level matter?

Y is not converted, but it counts in the distance used to pick the closest portal. Keep partner portals at a similar height.
