How it works

A slot holds one stack: 64 for most items, 16 for ender pearls, snowballs, eggs, signs, banners, honey bottles and empty buckets, and 1 for tools, armour and potions. Chests, barrels and shulker boxes have 27 slots; a double chest has 54.

Shulker boxes keep their contents when broken, so a double chest full of full shulker boxes holds 54 × 27 = 1,458 stacks.

A hopper moves one item every 8 game ticks: 2.5 items per second, 9,000 per hour. A minecart with hopper pulls from a container above it at one item per game tick (20 per second), which is why it's used to empty chests quickly.

2.5 items per second (one per 8 game ticks), 9,000 items per hour. To go faster, run several hopper lines in parallel or use a hopper minecart to unload.
