Farm Rate Calculator
Java EditionEstimate how much a farm produces per hour before you build it: iron farms by villager modules, or crop farms by plant count, hydration, layout and random tick speed — all from the game's own growth rules.

How it works
Crops grow on random ticks. Every game tick the game picks 3 random blocks (the randomTickSpeed gamerule) in each 16×16×16 section, so one block is ticked about every 68 seconds on average.
Each random tick a crop advances one stage with a chance that depends on the farmland under it: hydrated farmland and full 3×3 farmland give the best chance (1 in 3). Planting the same crop on all sides — a dense field — halves the growth points, dropping it to 1 in 6, which is why alternating rows of different crops grow faster.
Melon and pumpkin stems grow the same way, then try to place a fruit on one of four sides each random tick. Sugar cane and cactus grow one block every 16 random ticks of the top block (about 18 minutes).
Iron farms (Java 1.14+) use three or more panicking villagers: they summon a golem at most once every 30 seconds per villager group, and each golem drops 3–5 iron ingots (4 on average). Real farms add a few seconds of delay, so the interval is an editable estimate (35 s by default).
Formulas
- Random tick interval
- seconds = 4096 ÷ randomTickSpeed ÷ 20 (68.3 s at speed 3)
- Crop growth points
- f = 1 + farmland below (hydrated 3, dry 1) + ¼ × each of the 8 neighbours; ÷ 2 in a dense field
- Growth chance per random tick
- p = 1 ÷ (⌊25 ÷ f⌋ + 1) → 1/3 hydrated rows, 1/6 dense field, 1/7 dry
- Iron farm
- ingots/hour = modules × 3600 ÷ interval × 4
FAQ
How much iron does a basic iron farm make?
A single 3-villager panic module spawns at most one golem every 30 seconds. With real-world delays that's roughly 100 golems or about 400 iron ingots per hour. More modules (separate villager groups) multiply the rate.
Why do my crops grow slower in a big field?
The game halves a crop's growth points when the same crop surrounds it on both axes or diagonally. Alternate rows (wheat, carrots, wheat…) or leave paths to keep the 1-in-3 chance.
Does a higher random tick speed make farms faster?
Yes, linearly: randomTickSpeed 30 makes crops, cane and cactus grow 10× faster. Iron farms are unaffected — they depend on villager timers.
Are these exact numbers?
Crop rates are the exact averages of the game's growth formula, assuming instant harvest and replant. Real farms lose some time to harvesting cycles and chunk loading. The iron farm interval is an estimate you can adjust.
