Smelting & Fuel Calculator

Java Edition

Choose what you're smelting, how many, the appliance and the fuel. Get the time, the exact fuel to load per furnace in an array, and the XP you'll collect.

What to smelt

smelts 8 items per unit

A furnace array splits the items evenly

XP is the expected total; fractions are rolled per item, so a few points either way is normal. Collect it all at once from the output slot.

How it works

A furnace takes 10 seconds per item. A blast furnace (ores, raw metals and ancient debris only) and a smoker (food only) take 5 seconds, but burn fuel twice as fast — so a piece of coal smelts 8 items in all three.

In a furnace array the items are split evenly; every furnace needs whole fuel units, so the calculator rounds up per furnace and tells you how much capacity is left over.

Each smelted item gives a fixed amount of experience; fractions are rolled per item, so the total is the average you can expect when you take the output.

Formulas

Time
⌈items ÷ furnaces⌉ × 10 s (furnace) or 5 s (blast furnace, smoker)
Fuel per furnace
⌈items in that furnace ÷ items per fuel⌉ — coal 8, blaze rod 12, kelp block 20, coal block 80, lava 100
Experience
XP = items × XP per item (e.g. raw iron 0.7, raw gold 1, ancient debris 2)

FAQ

How many items does one coal smelt?

8, in a furnace, blast furnace or smoker. A block of coal smelts 80, a lava bucket 100, a blaze rod 12 and a dried kelp block 20.

Is a blast furnace worth it?

Yes for ores and raw metals: twice as fast for the same fuel per item. It can't smelt sand, cobblestone or food.

Which smelting gives the most XP?

Ancient debris (2 XP), then raw gold, gold ore, diamond/emerald ore and cactus (1 XP each). Cactus → green dye is a popular XP farm because it's renewable.
